Kitesurfing Vs Skateboarding - Pros & Cons
Before taking up skateboarding, Kitesurfing was my main leisure activity. In this video I head out on the kitesurfer for the first time in 2.5 years and take the opportunity to reflect on the pros and cons of Kitesurfing vs Skateboarding.

do what makes you happy mate.
phew glad you included pic of windsurfing there or I would have to unsubscribe 😆. srsly I am windsurfer turned skateboarder.. love skating for all the reasons you suggest... but may have to give up bc I keep getting injuries. agree there's a lot of faff in watersports, but windsurf forward loop is my best move and always feels pretty damn cool!
Yeah, love the windsurfing, but I’ve been spoilt over the years and struggle to enjoy it unless it’s perfect conditions (which is rare) the skating seems more reliable, but I will venture out on the windsurfer for my yearly blast !
I’m a skateboarder who breaks wind quite frequently, idk if that counts
😂
Nice, Jon. You made it look fun. I was sailing a Sunfish last week and a woman on the beach remarked to me that the setup/breakdown of sailing looked like a ton of work. I had the same thought about skating vs sailing and even surfing. It’s hard to deny the benefit of convenience in skateboarding, not to mention the lower cost of equipment as compared to most other sports.
Yeah dude, when it’s good conditions it’s ace, but I definitely got to a place where I often thought I’d rather have gone skating 😂
Use to kite landboarding at Gwithian. Just hard work getting tide and wind conditions right. Setup and the amount of kit involved is something else. Still have a buggy in the shed so you never know.
LEGEND!!! The whole time I was watching this I was thinking, no way, we are literally the same person lol. I am also a windsurfer and kitesurfer and skateboarder (also do wingfoiling which I'd highly recommend. Even saw a few of them out in the background during the video). But yeah, everything you said about how it's harder to progress with wind water sports because the conditions are always changing is totally true and I think the same thing all the time. That is also kind of why I got into skateboarding similar to you 👌 Love your videos! Huge respect for your talent and dedication to all these different sports (which are all incredibly difficult btw). Keep it up 🔥🔥🔥
Many thanks for tuning in dude !
Been kitesurfing for years and recently rediscovered skateboarding (at 45). Mostly kite foil when I’m out now, but agree I skate way more than kite. Learning Wing Foiling now - a lot less setup faff and more places to partake, I would highly recommend it.
Love this! Not much opportunity for kiting in North London apart from the odd trip to Southend. Some great skateparks. Oxhey, Bay, XC but I do miss getting out on the water!
Gnashers!
Hi john, I am a double bass player who does a lot of surfskate since 3 years. A new beautiful skatepark was just inaugurated in Brussels. One year ago I started wing foil and find it great. You have to pump the board and the wing. 10 mn. But the feeling of riding the foil and flying is amazing, even if I can not still jibe on the flight. It's very exciting since the 1st session. I loved it!!!
Great stuff!
Kitesurfing is rather intimidating. Skateboarding really is a good complimentary boardsport to paddleboarding and/or surfing as it gives the arms a break.
This was really cool! I definitely want to try this!
Nice to see you showcasing another skill I’ve not had much of an introduction to kite boarding so this was something a bit different for me to watch
Excellent. Nice ending.
i showed this to my step dad and he said "cool, now can i get that in american?"
Awesome shredding!
This is a great video Jon and also a really great insight into lines in a bowl. learned a lot!
only femmeboi's dont wear shoes in public
I realy enoyed your video's as they are relaxed and chill. So please keep your own pace, we will stick around anyway. I am an "old" guy of 47 years, restarted skateboarding again after 20+ years. And enjoying it, but on a different pace. Chill out and do whatever feels good to you and post whenever you want. Cheers mate.
Many thanks for tuning in !
Lol! Awesome spot at the end where he comes flying over the curb for a Bert-like finish!
It was a right laugh !!
I quit coffee from time to time for a few weeks to reset if I go above 2 cups a day. Grind your own at home. You'll save a fortune. For your back & and knees, I can highly recommend Knees Over Toes Guy. I'm fitter & more mobile plus pain-free at 46 than ever before. I skate plus own & run a BJJ gym and train almost everyday. I would also agrue than meat is very important as you age for muscle & repair. Like stated already in the comments I think most of us would be happy with a video once a month. All the best mate!
great video! just wandering which app you use to edit videos on the iPhone. Also stopped drinking coffee and trying to quit alcohol as well 💪💪💪
Great stuff, I just use the bog standard iMovie one that comes as standard?
We Really like your videos , a real inspiration for us grown ups learning to skate , keep making them , when u got the fire and stoke for it , thats what it takes 😊. Greetings from Denmark
Nice
Fantastic vid and thanks for posting it. It’s a great way to exercise because you have an element of danger and adrenaline added to the exercise. Those falls hurt a lot longer for us middle-aged guys!
Glad to see the rental worked out for you 🤙 I think the rental helmet would worry me more?! 😱 If you ever want to see someone go deeper than is sane into set-up madness, Ben Degros' channel used to be phenomenal - I think he's chilled out a bit with it now, but it used to be intense: how the truck height is going to compensate for this wheel size with that wheelbase... 😬 It makes me glad I've never been good enough to have to worry about those minor details!
Yeah dude, luckily didn’t have to ‘test’ the helmet, it fitted snug, looked silly, and I prefer my own everyday 😂
Great to see you back in the Bay Jon 👌🏼
I love your vids mate! don't give up! the most valueble content for me is begginer stuff, so whatever you do there is great.
Great idea to try riding something outside of your comfort zone! I feel more comfortable on "Old School" bigger shaped decks, and I ride either Indy's or Ace trucks(56mm wheels either 97 or 99 durometer). I do have a couple of smaller boards that I don't ride much. After watching, I will definitely try to ride them more!
Do you know anyone in their 50s who has started to skateboard at that age? Have you broken any bones since starting to skateboard?
Hey dude, I know and know of plenty of 50 year old skaters. I haven’t broken any bones, but it’s fair to say injuries are all part of it? At least for me anyway?!
@@JonBishopSkate Any suggestions for a good complete board from Skatehut or Arbor?
@@JonBishopSkate Any suggestions for a complete intro board £120-£150
@@timmcilveen1246 everything is pretty good in my experience, I’d just pick something that gets you excited ?!
I absolutely prefer my own custom model board and have now been riding it with Tensor Mag Lights for a year and earlier 52mm 93A Dragons, then 56m Dragons and now 56mm Nano-Cubics and have found them the perfect compromise for smooth concrete and wood bowls and mini & vert ramps. I have used loaner boards on my travels and 101A wheels are my nightmare as they are so slippery in a bowl where I might not always have the optimal lines & balance… BUT it’s better to skate than not and I just take it really easy and stay with my basics and go-tos and have fun when iffy conditions 😂
Totally dude !
Great video Jon, as usual. 👌 My son was so happy that he was in the background 😂... He is now a UA-cam star. 😅
Great to meet you guys !
Ventures have smallest yokes, meaning they hang up on the coping the least out of all the trucks. Indy, as opposite, tends to hang up the most.
Venture trucks are very underrated for transitions, I'm very happy with them. How did you find yourself carving?
Yeah dude, totally happy, certainly no worse than the other trucks I’ve tried !
Great job guys, someone's already shralpin hard
That bowl is pretty epic. Great vid🤙
It’s a cracking bowl !!
Very inspiring video
Switching from 8 to 8.5 made a big difference bowl riding, I wouldn't go back to anything smaller. I may upgrade to something slightly bigger on my next board though.
Sick Review Bro. I'll definitely grab one of these.
I'm exactly the same myself about knowing what I'm riding. I have a few variations and regularly use a handful of them but know what they all are. I put it down to middle aged man obsessions. I enjoy a wider, old school shape with 159s or 169s because they are fun and feel really stable, but generally if I'm at the park I use a 8.5" Venom blank deck on Enuff 149 trucks with Ricta 58mm 92a wheels and Birdhouse Abec 7 bearings, Pig Rails and Risers. It is a really nice setup now, if only I were skilled enough to make the most of it 😄
Just shifted from a shaped 9 to a pop 8.5.... can't really tell the difference....nose tricks ate a bit easier.....that's about it
Big decks are fun but a smaller deck is much more maneuverable
I went from an 8 to 8.5 and it is so much better for me. I have way more stability in the 8.5.
My experience is that length and wheelbase make much more of a difference than width when it comes to decks. I prefer wider boards with comparatively shorter wheelbase
The wheels feel like wheels and the trucks feel like trucks. That’s good, I guess lol
😂
Go Jon! Cool that you're doin this. Lookin good man.
I've been riding 8.75 or 8.8 decks and the same set of indy trucks since I started skating a couple years ago, but I've been thinking about getting an 8.5 next time. I was mostly thinking it would help with nailing down some flatground tricks (lighter, easier to flip). This video encouraged me to give it a go. I really haven't obsessed over my setup, but I'd like to do a little more experimentation.
Good stuff !!
nice sesh! glad there were no emotional dismounts!
😂
The fact that you know every detail of your skateboard shows how passionate you can be about skateboarding meanwhile good video
Many thanks for tuning in dude !
first
Nice !!
